How on earth did the world get flattened you ask? It’s a great story.

As Thomas Friendman pointed out in has fascinating book, “The World is Flat”, like the formation of the earth, it all took place in stages. It began slowly at first, and then took off at an ever increasing, breathtaking pace.

ln 1492 Christopher Columbus set sail for India, sailing west to prove a point: the world is round. Happily he eventually arrived on “East Coast of India”. With alarm he saw the Indian people on that coast were rather red in colour, so he solved that dilemma by calling them “Red Indians”. And so the "Free World" of America was discovered. As more new “worlds” emerged in this age of exploration, the world got more and more “round”. Nations talked to each other and trade started to whirl round the world. The first stage of globalization was born. Countries were empowered. They began to trade with each other.

The second stage in globalization was heralded in 1800 by the Industrial Revolution. In this new "Industrialized" era, great things happened. Let’s call it the era of invention and birth of communication. Conglomerates grew, companies were formed and institutions arose – and were empowered as they took centre stage in the accelerating growth of a new World Economy. This was the era of “Big Business” where Company Chairmen, CEOs, and big institutions ruled the roost. Companies were empowered. They began to trade with each other on a global scale.

Then, in 1980, we all went to sleep! When we awoke in the year 2000 we found the world was suddenly flat!

People from around the world were now just “next door”. New York was next door to Bangladesh! Out-sourcing and In-sourcing was a common concept. The third era of globalization had sneaked up on us all unawares.

E-mails were starting to replace the fax machine but this was not a revolution – or so we thought.

In 1989 the Berlin Wall came down – and Bill Gates’ Windows went up. The world was suddenly united on one single level playing field, the flat computer screen! We woke up to find that the world is indeed flat.  We had a window to the world from our desk. The age of empowerment for the INDIVIDUAL had arrived. We, "Individuals" are now empowered. We can trade freely around the whole "flat" world - unhindered - to anyone across the earth - from our PC Desk Top. Wow!

This new era – which I’ve capsulated in “NuEraBiz” sprang to life in the year 2000 and matured in leaps and bounds in an ever accelerating rate up to today!

The individual – no matter where he or she lives – no matter what the country, creed, belief, colour or whatever – each individual has now the potential and means to rise to being a CEO of his or her own business on par with the Industrial giants of our world.
